Exploring Rum Distilleries in Martinique: Must-Visit Spots
Martinique is not only famous for its idyllic beaches, lush forests, and rich cultural heritage; it is also a renowned hub for agricole rum, celebrated worldwide for its quality. The island is home to around a dozen active distilleries, some of which are open to visitors and offer a true immersion into the world of Martinican rum. Here is a selection of the most interesting distilleries to discover during your stay.
1. Habitation Clément (Le François) - Elegance and History Combined
Habitation Clément is much more than a distillery: it’s a cultural and heritage estate. Although distillation no longer takes place on-site, the estate offers a rich and engaging visit through its former distillery, beautiful botanical gardens, a traditional Creole house listed as a historic monument, and contemporary art exhibitions. A tasting of Clément rums (including the famous Canne Bleue) concludes the tour.

2. Depaz Distillery (Saint-Pierre) - Stunning View of Mount Pelée
Located on the slopes of Mount Pelée, Depaz Distillery combines breathtaking scenery with traditional craftsmanship. It is one of the few distilleries that produces rum from its own sugarcane plantation. The self-guided tour is free and highly informative, with plenty of explanatory signs throughout the site.
Don’t miss: the tasting of Depaz aged rum, known for its smoothness and notes of vanilla and oak.
3. J.M Distillery (Macouba) - A Gem in the North of the Island
Tucked away in lush greenery between river and mountain, J.M Distillery is one of the most authentic in Martinique. It offers a beautifully designed sensory tour where visitors can explore the stages of agricole rum production in an exceptional tropical setting. J.M rum is often considered one of the best on the island.
Don’t miss: the olfactory lab and the vintage aged rums available for tasting at the end of the visit.
4. Saint James Distillery (Sainte-Marie) – A Museum and a Train
This is one of the most well-known and most visited distilleries on the island. The site features a comprehensive rum museum, a large garden, and even a small train (seasonal). Saint James produces a wide range of rums, from white to very old.

5. La Mauny Distillery (Rivière-Pilote) - Tradition at the Heart of the Cane
Located in a lush valley in the south of the island, La Mauny Distillery (now called Maison La Mauny) has embodied Martinican expertise since 1749. The tour is both friendly and educational, with the option to ride a small train through the sugarcane fields to explore the facilities.
